Sci-Fi to fantasy adaptations could be rough in terms of logic, but "a guy fighting a giant dough monster with a magic lemon twig" seems just like something straight out of these kind of books, as well as the successive use of acquired special items in overcoming challenges, with the most (seemingly) useless of them playing a key role in the finale.
